The Quaker influence on Nantucket is evident in the exterior of the Starbuck House, built by the island’s first family of whaling in 1761. The Quakers disapproved of ornamentation, inspiring Dujardin to design the home in a contemporary version of Quaker simplicity. Contemporary light fixtures and 21st century artwork co-exist with Windsor chairs, a Queen Anne candlestand and original wood floors. The modern kitchen is well-suited to Quaker customs, with sleek lines and plain-fronted cabinets.
